The first Friday night matches for the season saw two very competitive games between Tatiara and Kingston/Lucindale.

Tatiara vs Kingston/Lucindale – Women
Kingston/Lucindale only had 9 available players, so in the true hockey spirit, two Tatiara players donned the navy and red and lined up opposite their teammates to create an 11 vs 11 game.
In the first minute Tatiara carried the ball straight down into their attack and looked like they would score early, but the strong Kingston/Lucindale defence denied the shot and held out. One minute later Tatiara were awarded a short corner and secured their first goal off a well-timed hit.
At the restart Kingston/Lucindale maintained more composure and battled to work the ball up the centre of the field, but were constantly overturned at the halfway line. They had more success on the right hand side, with several sideline frees and good passing, they worked the ball over their attacking 23 several times and had Tatiara chasing back hard to defend.
Tatiara then broke through and had a full field break leading to a 1 v 1 on the KL goalkeeper who sent the ball away from her goals with ease. The first quarter finished with a lot of ball flow in the midfield with no team maintaining control for too long to change the score.
The second quarter started with a fast break by Kingston/Lucindale, but the ball went over the baseline before they could control it. Kingston/Lucindale were not able to contain the free hit on its way out and Tatiara brought the ball up into their attack, created some clever play, working the ball around the keeper and scored their second.
Fast breaks seemed to be the theme of the game as Kingston/Lucindale then fired the ball forward and held the ball in attack with clever passing around the Tatiara defence, but couldn’t break past the goal line. Tatiara then turned up their pressure and threw an onslaught at the Kingston/Lucindale defence who, despite the constant barrage, held strong and didn’t concede another goal. Kingston/Lucindale managed to stop the barrage and run the ball up the field, but the halftime whistle went leaving the score at 2-0.
After the break Tatiara wasted no time getting back to work and scored 2 quick goals from good field play, and rocketed both into the corner of the goals leaving no opportunity for the Kingston/Lucindale defence to stop them. The remainder of the 3rd quarter then settled down and Kingston/Lucindale maintained a stronger defence, working the ball up the field but not able to convert.
There were plenty of strong midfield plays from both sides, but as neither team had players on the bench with fresh legs, the tiredness really started to show.
The fourth quarter went in a similar way to the third, the tired and battered Kingston/Lucindale defence still stood strong as Tatiara pressed heavily, but after conceding a short corner, they were unable to stop the Tatiara shot that was perfectly placed in the bottom left corner.
The Kingston/Lucindale attack found some last reserves of energy and brought the ball into their attack and applied some pressure, but as the game went on, Tatiara managed a break away run and secured their 6th goal of the match.
The game continued to be an excellent watch as both teams showed determination to finish the game strong, with several strong plays that challenged the opposition. The final whistle went, and Tatiara 6 defeated Kingston/Lucindale 0.

Tatiara vs Kingston/Lucindale – Men
An energetic start to the game saw both teams claiming strong circle penetrations. Defence was strong with Tatiara Brody Lock plucking an overhead pass out of the air with ease and Kingston/Lucindale Rangers Connor Butler intercepting a potential cross ball.
Tatiara won the first short corner within 10 minutes with Jonah Williams narrowly missing the corner shot. Quarter ended with no score, but rising tension and rain soaked uniforms.
The second quarter started with urgent circle penetrations and coordinated shooting by Tatiara, with Kingston/Lucindale midfield struggling to convert from defensive frees to their striker line.
Finally Kingston/Lucindale had a circle opportunity with Connor Williams shutting it down causing a long stalemate through the midfield reminiscent of a game of table tennis; up and back between both 23 yard lines.
Kingston/Lucindale Rangers Connor Butler received the first personal penalty of the season with a green card awarded for taking Tatiara player Jonah Williams to ground on a hard run into Tatiara’s attacking circle.
With one opposition player down, Tatiara came out hard spending most of the 2 minute penalty time in their attacking mode, with no success. Connor Butler sprinted back onto the field to pick up a 16 yard hit, wasting no time getting back into the game. Kingston/Lucindale lost Ben Goodridge to injury moments before the buzzer.
Tatiara chose halftime to strategically swap out goalies; James Verco enters the field game and Jonah Williams steps into the pads.
The first two minutes of the second half saw Hamish Verco scoring for Tatiara on his knees with a back stick deflection straight into the corner. Conceding this goal set Kingston/Lucindale Rangers defence into gear and put fire in the bellies of their attack.
The hunger to get back was evident. This quarter saw both teams showing off their aerial skills in attempts to beat their opposition’s defensive walls. Second goal was scored by Danny Verall for Tatiara, leading to more intensity on both sides.
Kingston/Lucindale won their first short corner of the game with no goal. A fast turnover saw Tatiara winning another short corner with a goal scored by Daniel Obst. Third quarter ended 3-0.
During the final break, both teams sucked in as much air as possible, the rain had subsided and chilly air was settling in.
Final quarter saw Hamish Verco score his second goal for Tatiara, a field goal with a clear run into the circle and shot at goal. James Verco received a green card for a desperate attempt to stop a run into Kingston/Lucindale Ranger’s circle.
With one opposition down, Kingston/Lucindale Rangers capitalise on the instability by winning a short corner, resulting in a turnover and a lengthy tussle in the midfield.
Isaac Hocking from Kingston/Lucindale Rangers showing off his stick skills by weaving and dragging around half of the Tatiara team to give hope for another circle penetration and scoring opportunity for KL Rangers. He seemed unstoppable but was shut down in the circle.
Crucially, the Tatiara release from their defence broke down, seeing a strong response from Kingston/Lucindale Rangers with Alec Ross scoring their first goal a mere seconds from the buzzer.
Final score, 4-1 Tatiara defeated KL Rangers with both teams leaving everything out on the turf.
