In a Grand Final for the ages, the Redlegs broke their 13 year premiership drought in a pulsating, come from behind victory against the Greenbottles on a windy Saturday afternoon. Players and passionate supporters had to battle it out against trying conditions, but that didn’t stop the game from being a gripping contest from start to finish.
Coming off a 4-1 victory in the last meeting between the two sides, Greenbottles came out hot in the first quarter, with smooth ball movement and passing that was causing the Redlegs some headaches in their defensive half. Scott Copping got Greenbottles first after a smashing shot at the goals, which sneaked its way past Andrew Doecke in goals. However, against the run of play, a stroke was scored by Jacob Edwards after a certain goal was stopped from the body of a Greens defender in a short corner.
The second quarter began with both teams being evenly matched. But as the quarter wore on, Greens started to assert their dominance on the game. Matt McGregor opened up the lead yet again with a fantastically placed tomahawk strike into the bottom far corner, with Gavin Boord quickly following suit with a shot of his own to open up a lead of 3-1 at the main break. The lead could easily have been more, but thanks to some brilliant last line defending from Reds backliners, they kept the margin to only 2.
What would happen in the third quarter was simply astonishing to say the least. Reds came out at a blistering pace, playing confident and quick one-two passes which was causing the ball to come into the circle at a suffocating rate. Peter Ingenito got on the end of a loose ball from the keepers pads to bring the margin back to one after sustained attacking pressure. Tyrone Coulter then got the scores level after a fast thinking, diving shot right in front of the goals. Then the lead was remarkably taken by the Reds after a smart short corner, with Brad Hann finishing the set play with a nice, low shot.
The final quarter was an intense battle for the premiership, as both sides clearly wanted to win. Every player gave everything they had, as the ball constantly moved end to end in a frantic finish to the season. The final whistle blew, with emotional reactions from the players and supporters as the Redlegs were, against all odds, crowned champions of the Men’s division for 2024!
A fitting finale to a phenomenal Men’s competition.
